Jake Walters’ work-based learning experience is more in depth than job shadowing.

After completing a career pathway in small power and passing a statewide skills assessment, he is enrolled in a diesel mechanic internship at the LaRue County Schools bus garage. He spends second period at the garage each day, learning hands-on.

Though his career interests are in another field, he’s learned a great deal that will help him succeed after high school, he said.

“You see what the career is like for someone who’s been in the career their whole life and you see their passion for it,” he said. “You see the importance of doing something you’re passionate about.”

After graduation in May, Jake plans to study history and pursue a career in education, but he has always had an interest in mechanics and enjoys working on vehicles.

“What you can do with your hands can never be taken away from you,” he said.

At the LCS garage, he’s assisted in inspecting and servicing buses and most recently has been working on a motor overhaul.

“It’s a very unique experience and I’m glad I had the opportunity,” he said.
